The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is designed to provide graduate schools with common measure for comparing the qualifications of applicants. Schools also use GRE scores to determine eligibility for merit-based grants and fellowships, as well as teaching and research assistantships.

Who should take the GRE?

Each year, more than 600,000 prospective graduate school applicants from approximately 230 countries take the GRE General Test. Applicants come from varying educational backgrounds and countries, and the GRE General Test provides the only common measure for comparing their qualifications.

How the GRE works?

The test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study. Each of the three sections on the GRE is scored separately. You will receive a "scaled score" within a range of 200-800 for the verbal and quantitative sections. You will receive a score on a scale of 0 to 6 for the writing section.
Section Length Question Types
Verbal Reading, analytical reasoning, and vocabulary 30 Minutes 30 Multiple-Choice
Quantitative Basic math, mathematical concepts, quantitative reasoning 45 Minutes 28 questions
Analytical Writing Grammar, writing ability, data interpretation, and analytical reasoning 75 Minutes One 45-minute essay
