Mr. S. Paul Lim
B. Sc., M.B.A., TBE, TESOL

Paul graduated with distinction from Harvey Mudd College, a prestigious liberal arts college and a top engineering school in California. He also has an M.B.A. from the National University of Singapore. Paul has many years of working experience in the IT industry and has authored two books -- on corporate governance and effective learning strategies for mastering vocabulary, respectively. Paul's sense of humor and active engagement approach in class have earned him the respect and praises from students in his IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, and GMAT courses.


Mr. Paul Desjardins
B.A., MLIS, TESOL

Paul grew up in California and also studied there. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master's degree at the University of California – Berkeley. Paul's professional experience includes employment at technology companies in Silicon Valley as well as the financial industry at Merrill Lynch and Bank of America. Paul has taught technical courses and written and edited technical papers. He teaches several courses at Kaplan including TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT and Successful Writing.


Ms Marie Li
BSc

Since 2006, Marie has been teaching various English courses in Hong Kong and abroad. She leads classroom seminars, workshops and lectures for academic research and writing at the university and secondary school levels. Marie also helps students to prepare for various public examinations including IELTS, TOEFL and SAT. She is a dedicated teacher well received by students for her warm personality.


Ms. Sharon Lee
B.Ed.

Sharon grew up in the UK and has a degree major in English with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. She is familiar with both the UK and Hong Kong education systems having taught at primary and secondary schools in the UK as well as at Diocesan Girls’ School in Hong Kong. She is excellent working with young children and secondary students because she engages them in fun, interactive learning. Sharon worked as a fundraiser with a UK charity and as a mentor in YMCA programmes. In addition to teaching English to working professional adults, she often transfers skills on how to communicate persuasively in a positive and personable manner.


Ms. Andrea Shaw
B.A.

Andrea graduated from Cornell University. She comes to Kaplan HK from Kaplan US, where she also helped students to achieve their target test scores. She has experience teaching university and high school students in the US and China. Test prep, as well as oral and written English are her specialty subjects. Currently, she leads SAT, TOEFL and IELTS courses.

The courses are really useful. As there are 3 mock IELTS exams, I am able to understand the structure of IELTS. Besides, the tutor in the Listening and Speaking course has always encouraged us to speak more. The tutors are really supportive which gave me confidence in facing the IELTS exam.

Important Figures

Most universities / colleges worldwide require students to obtain an IELTS band score between 5.5 and 7. However, some programs, such as, the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, would require an IELTS band score of 8.5 as part of its admission criteria. .

How the IELTS works?

You can choose from two types of IELTS test: Academic or General Training, depending on whether you want to work or for migration purposes. Both modules are made up of four parts - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The IELTS are graded on the unique 9-band scale.

Kaplan's IELTS Speaking and Listening preparation course covers both the Academic and the General Training modules whereas the Reading and Writing preparation course covers Academic module. Our course will focus on the English language elements, such as, its Contents, Organization & Fluency, Vocabulary, Grammar and Pronunciation.

The IELTS' nine band scores are described as below:

Expert User

Has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.

 

Very Good User

Has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.

 

Good User

Has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

 

Competent User

Has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

 

Modest User

Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field.

 

Limited User

Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations.

 

Extremely Limited User

Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations.

 

Intermittent User

No real communication is possible except for the most basic information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs.

 

Non User

Essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words.
